Before reading comes readiness — built the joyful way
The strongest predictor of reading success isn't flashcards at age three. It's a rich foundation: sounds, letters, language, and a child who believes books are wonderful. That foundation can be built deliberately — and gently.
Early literacy is everything a child needs before and alongside formal reading: phonological awareness (hearing that words are made of sounds — rhyming, clapping syllables, isolating first sounds), letter knowledge (names, shapes, and sounds), print concepts (we read left to right; words have spaces; that squiggle means something), oral language (vocabulary and the ability to tell and follow a story), and motivation — the conviction that reading is a treat, not a test.
Phonological awareness deserves special mention because it's invisible and it's the linchpin: a child who can't hear that “cat” starts with /k/ cannot use phonics, no matter how many letters they know. It's also very teachable — through games, songs, and play that children genuinely enjoy.

Play-informed, teacher-guided
Sessions for four-, five- and six-year-olds don't look like school and shouldn't. They look like games, movement, stories, and crafts — with over a decade of kindergarten teaching hiding inside every choice. This is the age group I teach every single day, and I know how to keep the youngest learners engaged and how to end every session with a child who feels proud.
Early literacy tutoring is a lovely fit for children preparing for kindergarten, kindergartners who are behind benchmarks, and 1st graders who need the foundations shored up before formal phonics work can take hold.

Questions parents ask
Isn't tutoring too much pressure for a four- or five-year-old?
It would be, done wrong. Done right, it's the least pressured hour of a young child's week — play with a purpose, one-on-one attention, and constant success. I've taught kindergarten for years; keeping learning joyful at this age is the core skill of the job.
Should my child be reading before kindergarten?
No — that's a myth that stresses families out. What genuinely helps is the foundation: sound awareness, some letter knowledge, rich language, and positive feelings about books. That's what we build. If reading emerges early, wonderful; if not, your child arrives ready for it.
How long are sessions for this age?
Shorter and more flexible than for older kids — attention spans rule everything at this age. We'll find the length and rhythm that fits your child, and I'd rather end five minutes early with a happy child than push to the hour.
