2nd grade · "I hate reading"
A capable 2nd grader avoided books and guessed at words. The first-session assessment found the real cause: a specific phonics gap left over from 1st grade. Sessions rebuilt the missing patterns systematically, paired with books matched to his interests — and within a semester, guessing gave way to decoding, and "I hate reading" gave way to a chapter-book series he chose himself.
4th grade · The fractions wall
A 4th grader who had always been "fine at math" hit fractions and started saying she was bad at it. Instead of more worksheets, sessions went concrete-first — fraction strips, number lines, cooking-style problems — until the ideas made sense before the procedures. Over several months her test scores recovered, and more importantly, so did her willingness to attempt hard problems.
3rd grade · Nightly homework battles
Homework was a 90-minute nightly negotiation, exhausting the whole household. Tutoring worked on the skills underneath — reading stamina and math facts — while building a simple, consistent routine with the family. Within weeks the battles shrank to a predictable half hour, and the parents got their evenings back along with plain-language updates on the real progress underneath.
5th grade · Ahead, and bored
An advanced 5th grader was coasting — strong grades, no challenge, fading engagement. Enrichment sessions added depth rather than acceleration: richer problems, real reading discussion, and the study habits middle school would soon demand. Where do sessions take place?
Wherever works best for your family: In-home sessions come to you anywhere in the South Bay of Los Angeles — Torrance, the beach cities, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula — or we meet online in a live, one-on-one video session.
What ages and grades do you tutor?
South Bay Peak Learning works with elementary students from transitional kindergarten (TK) through 5th grade. Those are the years I've taught professionally for more than 13 years, and the years where the right support makes the biggest long-term difference.
Is tutoring only for kids who are struggling?
Not at all. Some of our students are catching up, some are staying on track through a rough patch, and some are advanced learners who need more challenge than the classroom can offer. With years of gifted-and-talented enrichment experience, I enjoy both ends of that spectrum.
How often should tutoring sessions occur?
Once or twice a week works for most elementary students — often enough to build momentum, light enough to fit real family life. We'll recommend a rhythm at the consultation and adjust it anytime.
How quickly will my child improve?
Most families notice visible changes — smoother homework, more willingness to try — within three to six weeks of consistent sessions. Deeper gains, like closing a reading gap, typically take a few months of steady work, tracked and shared in plain language.
Can tutoring help with confidence?
Yes — for many families it's the first change they notice. Sessions are built around achievable wins and mistakes treated as useful information, and that confidence carries back into the classroom and homework.
How are tutoring plans personalized?
Every plan starts with a friendly first-session assessment, then targets your child's specific skills in the order that unlocks the most — adjusted continually as they grow. No workbook sequences, no one-size-fits-all.
Do you assign homework?
Rarely, and always small. Elementary students already have homework; our job is to make it easier, not heavier. When practice at home helps, it's a five-minute game, not a worksheet packet.
How do parents receive progress updates?
Briefly and often: a quick plain-language update after sessions about what we worked on and how it went, plus fuller check-ins as milestones pass. You'll never wonder what's happening in the tutoring hour.
