About
Tutoring built the way a teacher would build it
This practice exists for one reason: elementary students do their best learning one-on-one, with a professional who knows exactly what they should be learning and exactly how children learn it.
The philosophy
South Bay Peak Learning is a one-teacher practice, and that's the point — every family works directly with me, Andreea Schwimmer. After more than a decade in elementary classrooms, I've learned that almost every "struggling student" is really a student with a gap — a missing skill somewhere back down the line that makes everything built on top of it feel shaky. A 3rd grader who "hates reading" is often a 3rd grader with an unresolved phonics gap from 1st grade. A 4th grader who "can't do math" usually never became fluent with the facts underneath it.
Classrooms, even great ones, can't always stop for one child. That's what tutoring is for. One-on-one, I can find the gap, close it, and rebuild the confidence that leaked out through it.
How I work
Every student gets a personalized learning plan — not a generic workbook sequence. I use differentiated instruction, the same approach I use to reach twenty-plus different learners in my own classroom, adapted to an audience of exactly one. Sessions mix direct teaching, guided practice, and hands-on activities, because elementary-age children learn by doing, not by listening.
I also take social-emotional learning seriously. Many children arrive at tutoring convinced they are "bad at" something. Undoing that belief is not a nice-to-have; it's the foundation everything else gets built on. We celebrate progress out loud, normalize mistakes as part of learning, and build healthy strategies for frustration.
What parents can expect
Clear communication, every time. After sessions you'll know what we worked on, what improved, and what comes next. If something isn't working, I'll say so and adjust — that's what thirteen years of collaborating with parents, colleagues, and administrators has taught me to do well.
Where I teach
I offer in-home tutoring throughout the South Bay area of Los Angeles County — including Torrance, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Lomita, Gardena, Lawndale, Hawthorne, El Segundo, and Carson — as well as live online tutoring for families anywhere.
