Parents sometimes hear a frustrating sentence during homework:
“I know the answer. I just don’t know how to explain it.”
The child may be correct.
They may recognize the answer immediately, solve the problem mentally or understand the story—but struggle when asked to explain how they know.
This is common, especially in elementary school.
Thinking and explaining are related skills, but they are not exactly the same.
Being able to communicate reasoning requires children to slow down, organize ideas, choose words and sometimes show steps that happened very quickly in their minds.
Those explanation skills become increasingly important as schoolwork becomes more complex.
Knowing Is Not Always the Same as Explaining
Imagine being asked to explain exactly how you recognize a familiar face.
You know who the person is immediately.
But describing the mental process behind that recognition may be difficult.
Children experience something similar.
A student may instantly know that 8 × 5 = 40 but struggle to explain why.
A child may understand that a character in a story is disappointed but have difficulty identifying the sentence that supports that conclusion.
The knowledge may be there.
The explanation needs development.
Schools Increasingly Ask Students to Show Their Thinking
Elementary assignments often include directions such as:
- Explain your answer.
- Show your work.
- Use evidence from the text.
- Tell how you know.
- Write a complete sentence.
- Describe your strategy.
These questions are not simply adding extra work.
They help teachers understand whether the student truly understands the concept.
Two students can write the same answer for completely different reasons.
One understood.
The other guessed.
Explanation helps reveal the difference.
Math Is a Common Place for This Challenge
Many children learn to solve math mentally.
That can be a strength.
But when a teacher asks:
“How did you solve it?”
the child may say:
“I just knew.”
Sometimes that is accurate.
But learning to explain a strategy develops mathematical reasoning.
For example, instead of simply saying:
“47 + 28 = 75,”
a child might explain:
“I added 20 to 47 to get 67, then added 8 more.”
There are many valid strategies, and mental math taught on purpose gives children words for the ones they already use.
The important part is learning to communicate one — which is much of what math tutoring practises alongside the arithmetic.
Reading Requires Evidence, Not Just an Answer
Reading comprehension creates a similar challenge.
A student might correctly say:
“The character was nervous.”
Then the teacher asks:
“How do you know?”
Now the student must return to the text.
Perhaps the character:
- avoided speaking
- worried about making a mistake
- kept checking the clock
- felt sick before a presentation
The student must connect the conclusion to evidence.
That is a different skill from simply understanding the story, and it is the skill reading tutoring and reading comprehension, explained both concentrate on.
Writing Adds Another Layer
Some children can explain an idea perfectly out loud but struggle to put it into writing.
They may know exactly what they want to say.
Then the pencil hits the paper and everything slows down.
Writing requires the child to manage:
- ideas
- vocabulary
- sentence structure
- spelling
- punctuation
- handwriting or typing
- organization
All at the same time.
A weak written explanation does not always mean weak understanding.
Sometimes the bottleneck is written expression, which is where writing tutoring and work on sentences as the unit writing is built from are more useful than more comprehension practice.
Ask “How Do You Know?”
One of the easiest ways parents can build explanation skills is by occasionally asking:
“How do you know?”
Keep the tone curious rather than corrective.
For example:
Child:
“The answer is 24.”
Parent:
“How did you figure that out?”
Or:
Child:
“The main character is angry.”
Parent:
“What happened in the story that made you think that?”
These short conversations encourage children to translate thinking into language.
Let Them Explain Imperfectly
Do not require a perfectly worded answer immediately.
Children need room to organize their thoughts.
If they say:
“I don’t know how to say it,”
try:
“Start anywhere. Tell me what you were thinking.”
You can help shape the explanation afterward.
The goal is to get the reasoning out first.
Use Sentence Starters
Sentence starters can help children who freeze when asked to explain.
Useful examples include:
- “I knew this because…”
- “First I…”
- “I noticed that…”
- “The story says…”
- “My strategy was…”
- “I think this because…”
- “Another way to solve it is…”
These give children a starting structure without giving them the answer.
Ask for One Step at a Time
Some children become overwhelmed when asked to explain an entire process.
Break it down.
Instead of:
“Explain how you solved the problem.”
try:
“What did you do first?”
Then:
“What did you do next?”
This is especially helpful for multi-step math problems and writing tasks.
Drawings Can Help
Children do not always need to begin with words.
They can sometimes explain thinking through:
- pictures
- number lines
- diagrams
- counters
- arrows
- labels
- quick sketches
Once the child can show the idea visually, putting it into words often becomes easier.
Encourage More Than One Strategy
If a child can solve a problem one way, ask occasionally:
“Could you solve it another way?”
This builds flexible thinking.
For example, 9 + 7 might be solved by:
- adding 7 to 9
- making a ten first
- using doubles plus one
Understanding multiple strategies strengthens mathematical reasoning.
Don’t Confuse Slow Explanation With Weak Ability
Some children need more time to formulate verbal responses.
That does not mean they do not understand.
Give them a moment.
Avoid immediately supplying the explanation.
Silence for five or ten seconds may feel long to an adult, but it gives a child time to organize language.
Explanation Builds Confidence
Being able to explain an answer has another benefit.
It shows children that they did not simply get lucky.
When students can say:
“I know this is right because…”
their confidence becomes grounded in reasoning.
That is stronger than depending constantly on an adult to say:
“Yes, you’re correct.”
Watch for a Persistent Gap
Occasional difficulty explaining is normal.
A repeated pattern may deserve attention.
For example, a child consistently:
- gives correct answers but cannot show any process
- guesses frequently
- struggles to organize verbal ideas
- cannot support reading answers with evidence
- cannot explain math strategies
- becomes very frustrated when asked to elaborate
This can help parents and teachers identify the specific skill that needs support.
Explanation Is a Skill That Can Be Practiced
Children do not automatically know how to explain thinking simply because they understand an idea.
The skill grows with practice.
Parents can help through short, natural conversations rather than turning every homework assignment into a formal lesson.
Ask:
“How did you know?”
Listen.
Ask one follow-up question.
Then move on.
Over time, those small conversations can strengthen reasoning, language and confidence.
Final Thoughts
When a child says:
“I know the answer. I just can’t explain it,”
take that statement seriously.
The student may understand more than they can currently communicate.
The next step is not necessarily more worksheets.
It may be helping the child put their thinking into words.
