Mental math, taught on purpose
Mental math isn't a gift some kids have — it's a small set of nameable strategies plus number sense. Here's the set, in teachable order, and the car games that build it.

Watch an adult figure a tip, double a recipe, or sanity-check a bill and you're watching mental math — the arithmetic humans actually use most. Yet many children believe it's a magic power ("Jayden just knows") rather than what it is: a small set of nameable strategies running on number sense. Name them, practice them in the car, and any child with basic facts joins the club.
The core strategy set

Notice what these share: they treat numbers as quantities with insides — which is why mental math and number sense build each other in a loop. Every strategy rep deepens the sense; deeper sense suggests better strategies.
Estimation: the everyday superpower
The mental-math skill with the biggest life payoff isn't exact — it's approximately right, fast. Estimation ("about how much?") powers shopping, tipping, planning, and — crucially for school — the reasonableness alarm that catches 34 − 18 = 24 and calculator typos alike. Build it as a game: guess the grocery total before checkout (round each item, keep a running friendly sum); estimate the page count left, the minutes to grandma's, the popcorn kernels in the bowl. Praise close-enough loudly; precision is the algorithm's job, ballpark is the mind's.
Keeping it honest
- Facts first: strategies run ON basic facts — a child without addition facts within 20 needs those before friendly-number games (see the addition guide)
- Strategies are optional routes, not new rituals: the goal is a toolkit and the judgment to choose, including 'this one wants paper'
- Talk beats speed: 'how did you do it?' is the whole curriculum — one strategy explained aloud is worth twenty silent answers
- Normalize different routes: your break-apart vs. their compensation, both celebrated — flexibility IS the skill

Questions parents ask
Isn't mental math just for naturally mathy kids?
No — watch a 'naturally mathy' kid closely and you'll find strategies: making tens, compensating, breaking numbers apart. Those strategies have names and teaching sequences; any child with basic facts can learn them. The gift is mostly instruction, early or explicit.
My child insists on the paper algorithm for everything, even 199 + 47. Is that bad?
It's a signal worth nudging: algorithms are wonderful tools, but reaching for paper on 199 + 47 (which begs for 'take 1 from 47: 200 + 46') suggests numbers are being processed as digit-columns rather than quantities. Strategy talk — 'is there a lazy way?' — reopens the mental route.
Which matters more: mental math or the standard algorithms?
Both, for different jobs — algorithms for gnarly computation, mental strategies for everything daily life actually throws (tips, change, doubling recipes, sanity-checking the calculator). Schools teach both; homes are where the mental side gets its reps.
How does estimation fit in?
Estimation is mental math's most-used product: 'about how much?' before any calculation builds the reasonableness alarm that catches wild errors. Front-end estimation (round everything, compute roughly) is learnable from 2nd grade and worth practicing at every store you enter.
