The Difference

Why families choose a working teacher

Plenty of tutors can follow a workbook. Very few spend every school day teaching the exact curriculum your child is learning right now.

I've taught kindergarten and 2nd grade at Encino Charter Elementary School since 2017, served as a grade level chair, coordinated the school's GATE program, and tutored through a district targeted-intervention program. Before that, I spent years teaching students with special needs — including two years as a one-on-one home-school teacher right here in Manhattan Beach.

That range matters. Whether your child is catching up, keeping up, or racing ahead, I've taught students just like them — and I know how to meet each one where they are.

Every kind of learner

From targeted intervention to GATE coordination — experience across the full spectrum of learners.

Confidence first

Social-emotional learning is built into every session, because kids learn best when they feel safe and capable.

Parents in the loop

Clear, regular communication about what we worked on, what's improving, and what's next.

Your Tutor

Hi, I'm Ms. Schwimmer

Kindergarten and 2nd grade teacher, GATE coordinator, former special-needs and home-school teacher, and — for one hour a week — your child's biggest academic ally. I've spent over 13 years learning how children learn. Tutoring is where I get to apply all of it to an audience of exactly one.

How It Works

Getting started is simple

No contracts, no mystery. Just a teacher, a plan, and steady progress. See the full process →

We talk

A free, no-pressure conversation about your child — strengths, struggles, and what you're hoping tutoring can do.

I assess

In our first session I get a clear picture of where your child actually is, using the same practical judgment I use in the classroom every day.

Your child grows

We meet weekly with a personalized plan, and you get regular updates on progress — not just 'it went great.'

For Parents

What changes at home

  • Homework time stops being a nightly negotiation — the routine and strategies come from me
  • You always know how your child is really doing, in plain language, not report-card code
  • A teacher in your corner for school questions: assessments, conferences, curriculum
  • Your role shifts back to encourager-in-chief — the job only a parent can do

Testimonials & Trust

Three promises to every family

You will always know what we worked on, what improved, and what comes next — after every session, in plain language.

— My promise on communication

Your child will leave every session having succeeded at something real. Confidence is a goal I plan for, not a side effect I hope for.

— My promise to your child

If tutoring isn't the right tool, or I'm not the right fit, I will tell you — and when your child no longer needs me, that's a win we celebrate.

— My promise on honesty

Questions parents ask

Where do sessions take place?

Wherever works best for your family: I come to your home anywhere in the South Bay area of Los Angeles — Torrance, the beach cities, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and surrounding communities — or we meet online in a live, one-on-one video session.

What ages and grades do you tutor?

I work with elementary students from transitional kindergarten (TK) through 5th grade. Those are the years I've taught professionally for more than 13 years, and the years where the right support makes the biggest long-term difference.

Is tutoring only for kids who are struggling?

Not at all. Some of my students are catching up, some are staying on track through a rough patch, and some are advanced learners who need more challenge than the classroom can offer. As a former GATE coordinator, I enjoy both ends of that spectrum.
